Tooth “Wear” is the loss of natural tooth structure that is progressing faster than normal due to eating, talking and swallowing. Tooth wear can cause significant damage and result in the teeth needing root canals, crowns or removal. The esthetic impact is the visible shortening of the teeth as well as smile changes. This loss of your tooth material can have several causes, all of which can be managed or eliminated to allow your teeth to stay strong and healthy throughout your life. The rate at which teeth wear accelerates over time.

One of the common causes is the presence of acid in your mouth, which basically dissolves your teeth. If you commonly experience heartburn or acid reflux, or have been diagnosed with GERD by a physician then you are at high risk. Talk to us about some simple, at-home solutions to keep your teeth protected.

Another cause of tooth wear is touching or rubbing the teeth together in a harmful way. This can occur during sleep, but also during the day during activities like driving and working at a computer. A small, custom-fitted and comfortable acrylic appliance can be worn over the teeth as protection.

Abrasive toothpastes or cleaning products and vigorous scrubbing with a toothbrush can also remove vital tooth structure. We can help you keep your smile healthy and bright by recommending products and techniques that are non-abrasive.
